How to study processes as they unfold over time: A brief history and a glimpse of the future.

Abstract

Although process research has a long history in psychology, it also used to be difficult to gather the intensive longitudinal data that it requires. However, recent technological innovations—including experience sampling, ambulatory assessments, and electronic diaries—have made it quite easy to obtain such data, and we are currently witnessing an exponential growth in the number of studies using these new data collection techniques. I will provide a bird’s-eye view of these developments and discuss the exciting opportunities this has in store for us.
